The BPP conference series was originally established to address aqueous two-phase partitioning, but starting with the BPP 2003 meeting in Vancouver, the scope has been broadened to include bioseparation technologies more generally.
The focus is on the underlying technical aspects, with business and regulatory aspects de-emphasized.

Conference Topics

The BPP conference series was originally established to address aqueous two-phase partitioning, but starting with the BPP2003 in Vancouver, the scope has been broadened to include bioseparation technologies more generally. Following the previous editions (Vienna in 2015, Copenhagen in 2017 and Brazil in 2019), the BPP2022 focus is on the underlying technical aspects and aims to include disruptive applications and challenges in the field.

Cristiana Boi

"Membranes in biomanufacturing – A truly enabling technology"

SHORT BIO: Cristiana Boi is Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering at the University of Bologna, Italy and Adjunct Faculty in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, USA.
She has been the President of the European Membrane Society (EMS) for the years 2017-18, one of the funding members of the World Association of Membrane Societies (WA-MS) where she served as Secretary for the years 2018-2020.
Her research activity is in the field of membrane and chromatographic separations, in particular regarding the preparation, modification and characterization of functional materials for bioseparations and water purification. The main focus is on the fundamental aspects of the different processes considered and on their possible applications. Current projects involve the purification of gene therapy vectors, mAbs, extracellular vesicles (EVs), the removal of toxins and small molecules from blood and water streams, and the production of novel chromatographic media. Since March 2020 she is working on surgical masks testing and on researching novel masks materials.
She has been the President of the European Membrane Society (EMS) for the years 2017-18, one of the funding members of the World Association of Membrane Societies (WA-MS) where she served as Secretary for the years 2018-2020.

João F. Mano

"Interfacial processing of biomaterials"

SHORT BIO: João F. Mano is a Full Professor at the Chemistry Department of University of Aveiro, Portugal, where he is directing the COMPASS Research Group, from the Associated Laboratory CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials. His research interests include the use of advanced biomaterials and cells towards the progress of transdisciplinary concepts to be employed in regenerative and personalised medicine. In particular, he has been applying biomimetic and nano/micro-technology approaches to polymer-based biomaterials and surfaces in order to develop biomedical devices with improved structural and (multi-)functional properties, or in the engineering of microenvironments to control cell behaviour and organization, to be exploited clinically in advanced therapies or in drug screening. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Materials Today Bio (Elsevier). He has been coordinating or involved in many national and European research projects, including Advanced and Proof-of-Concept Grants from the European Research Council.

Robin D. Rogers
Research Professor at The University of Alabama and President, Owner, and Founder of 525 Solutions, Inc.
"Old and New Uses of Aqueous Biphasic Partitioning You Likely Don’t Know About: Radiopharmaceutical Generators to Biomass Processing"

SHORT BIO: Dr. Robin D. Rogers is President, Owner, and Founder of 525 Solutions, Inc., in Tuscaloosa, AL USA and Professor Emeritus at The University of Alabama. In 2019-2020 he also served as Tage Erlander Professor at Stockholm University to help bring sustainable development to Sweden. Since 2019 he has been an Honorary Professor in the School of Engineering, University of Kwazulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and since 2020 an Adjunct Professor at the University of Wyoming. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Chemical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition to 525 Solutions, Inc., he is currently part owner of 525 SDT LLC, Wyonics LLC, Adjacency Labs Corporation, CalAgua Innovations Corporation, and RGP-525 LLC.

Sophia Hober
Head of the Division of Protein Technolohy, KTH Royal Institute of Technology
"Mild Purification of Biologicals – From a Novel Affinity Molecule to Continuous Pilot Scale Purification"

SHORT BIO: Sophia Hober is Professor of Molecular Biotechnology at KTH in Stockholm, Sweden. She is working with the design and development of detection and purification systems including improvements of the alkaline tolerance of protein A and protein G for industrial purification of IgG/HSA (Currently a product sold by GE-Health care). Moreover, small bispecific protein domains, with ability to strongly and selectively bind to two different proteins have been developed. These domains have been designed for use in protein purification as well as for cancer theranostics. Prof. Hober is the author of more than 150 full‑length scientific papers and has filed more than 20 international patent applications. She is cofounder of 4 start-up companies and member of several Board of Directors. She is also elected member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.

Arne Staby
Scientific VP/Senior Principal Scientist at CMC Strategic Partnering, Novo Nordisk A/S
"Model Utilisation in the Biopharmaceutical Industry"

SHORT BIO: Arne Staby obtained a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from The Technical University of Denmark, Department of Chemical Engineering in 1993, and after finishing his post-doc in 1995, he has been working with development of purification processes for recombinant proteins and peptides at Novo Nordisk A/S, both as scientist, specialist, project manager, and department head.
Current responsibilities include preparation and implementation of strategies within intellectual property rights, trade secrets, life-cycle management, technology development, Quality by Design, and bioethics for development of biopharmaceuticals.
Arne Staby has published and holds many papers and patents within industrial purification of proteins, and he frequently acts as oral presenter, program chair and session chair at international conferences, and as referee for international journals and in evaluation of Ph.D. theses.
In 2009-2016, he was appointed Adj. Professor in protein purification at Department of Chemical Engineering, Lund University, Sweden. In 2019, he was appointed honorary doctor (Dr.h.c.) in Biotechnology at Lund University, Sweden.

Jorge F. B. Pereira

"Ionic liquids, eutectic solvents and biosolvents: an advance in downstream processing of bioproducts from microbial sources"

SHORT BIO: Jorge B. F. Pereira is Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra (UC) (Portugal), Sub-Director (from July 2020) of the Chemical Process Engineering and Forest Products Research Centre (CIEPQPF) and Sub-Director of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the UC. Since 2014, Pereira has been leading his own research team, “BioPPuL – Bioproducts’ Production and Purification Lab”, which focuses on the development of biotechnological processes for the production, separation and purification of added-value bioproducts (such as natural products, biopharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals), using extraction-based technologies, particularly solid-liquid and liquid-liquid extraction processes (e.g., aqueous biphasic systems). He is also an experienced researcher in the fields of process integration and scale-up of separation processes; development of biotechnological processes with emphasis on fermentation; and study of interactions at molecular level in separation processes.

Sonja Berensmeier
Mechanical Engineering - Bioseparation Engineering Group. Technical University of Munich
"New Benchmarks in Magnetic Separation of Protein Purification"

SHORT BIO: Sonja Berensmeier leads the Bioseparation Engineering Group at the Technical University of Munich, Germany since 2009, after several years as a group leader at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in the area of biofunctional surfaces. She meets the challenge for applied integration of molecular biology, biotechnology, particle technology, and process engineering. The focus of the current research is process intensification by adsorptive and extractive separation methods. In the field of adsorbents she is specialized in magnetic and conductive particles.
